Only lab in the world printing on handmade cotton rag sheets, something we developed from our devotion to real fine art printing. Nations Photo Lab Review & Rating. Nations Photo Lab may not have Snapfish or Shutterfly's name recognition when it comes to photo printing services, but it certainly delivers the goods. Nations delivered the best test prints of any service I tested, with more accurate colors and finer detail. ![]() And they arrived in the most protective packaging. The company's pricing is very reasonable, though you don't get the option to pick up your pictures the same day you order them at a local drug store chain, and its web interface isn't quite as slick as that of Snapfish. Still, it's our top pick for the best print quality. Pricing and Getting Started. Nations charges more for the standard 4- by- 6 print than most of the competition, at 2. The 5- by- 7s in my test order only cost 6. Shutterfly (9. 9 cents) and Snapfish (6. You can have prints shipped via ground ($7 for my test order), 2nd day ($1. If you visit Nations' Maryland lab location, you can pick up your prints for free. My whole order of 1. This beats Shutterfly's $1. Walgreens' $1. 7. Snapfish and York Photo Labs charge less, at $8. To start an order with Nations, as with any online photo- printing service, you need to upload your pictures. And as with most, you start by creating a new Gallery. Unlike Snapfish, and Shutterfly, Nations does support drag- and- drop from Windows Explorer. You can upload JPG and TIFF files, which is more than most services, which usually limit you to JPG and maybe PNG. TIFF support marks Nations as more professional, but you can't upload raw camera files or PNGs. You can select multiple files to be uploaded at once, but there's a maximum number of 4. MB. That last limit won't affect most, but it could spell trouble for people who use select high- end cameras, such as the Sony Alpha 7. R II or Canon 5. DS, which shoot at 4. TIFF files in particular from those models easily surpass the 4. MB file- size limit. On the ordering page, Nations makes it a little harder to select multiple prints for the same image. The other services usually show selection boxes for the standard size selections—4- by- 6, 5- by- 7, 8- by- 1. With Nations, you must select the photos, and then the size. After selecting them, I had to approve the service's suggested crops, which is a good thing—you don't want Aunt Debbie's head half cut off. The service offers no photo- editing or enhancing tools at all, such as those offered by Snapfish. But you're probably better off doing that stuff on your computer using an app like Windows Photos or Adobe Lightroom, which avails you of more options than online editing. There's another issue with cropping: You can't uncrop. That is, you can choose a subset of the image, but you can't zoom out and make it smaller on the page. This is particularly problematic when you have a square image that you want to print on rectangular paper. Another problem is that if you choose a border, such as white or black, Nations doesn't show you a preview of it with your image. In the next and final step before ordering, you can choose from several mounting options, which cost significantly more than the standard prints—single- weight matboard costs $2. That's more choice than Shutterfly, which only offers cardstock for larger- size prints. You can also choose border options and black- and- white treatment on a per- photo basis here. Another Nations interface option is a tool called ROES, which requires a Java plug- in—something many browsers are eschewing of late. This is basically a program that looks at the photo folders on your PC. I had a problem with this in that my high- dpi 4. K display wasn't well supported—the text was tiny. The tool offers some color correction, but other than that, I didn't see a big advantage over the standard web interface. If you're looking for a service with some online gallery- sharing capabilities, Nations is not for you. Snapfish and Walgreens offer online sharing of your uploaded galleries, but if that's a key functionality for you, you're better off with a powerful online service, such as Flickr or Smug. Mug, which offer both public and private galleries. The Picture- Perfect Results. My Nations photo order came back in double layer cardboard shipping protection. ![]() Broaden your photo editing toolset with a collection of premium photo and video software and extra creative content, only in PaintShop Pro X9 Ultimate. The photos were perfectly flat and printed on genuine Kodak Endura photographic paper. This was far more impressive than the curled, unbranded paper used by Walgreens, and Snapfish's loose 8- by- 1. More importantly, the images were more natural than the Walgreens and Shutterfy results, which tended to be oversaturated and lacking in things like sky detail. My landscape shot even showed cloud details in the Nations print that were just white in the Walgreens print, which also introduced purplish- pink discoloration to the clouds. I saw a little more detail in the Snapfish print of the same mountain landscape photo, but in dark shots, Nations was more convincing. Impressively, a black background in the Nations print was the truest black rendering of any service tested, with no color tinge. For a portrait with a black background, the Walgreens print was acceptable, but the Nations was more natural. Snapfish and Shutterfly were each on a par for the same portrait. The Best Photo Printing in the Nation? Buying prints from Nations is a bit less streamlined than with the bigger consumer- targeted services like Shutterfly and Snapfish, but the results are worth it. Not only did my test prints reveal the best overall image quality, but they were shipped in the most protective packaging. And pricing is very reasonable. Nations Photo Labs is PCMag's Editors' Choice for photo printing services for its top image quality, joining Snapfish, which is our top pick for best value in the category.
